Punctuation Pop Up (Comma)

For our writing all the kids in room 5 had to make a punctuation pop up which gives information about our punctuation mark. I got given the comma. This is what is says.

the comma is a punctuation mark that appears in many various languages. It has the shape of an apostrophe or single closing quotation mark. It is different from them though being put on the baseline of text

Here is a picture of my punctuation pop up.

Mover & Shaker - Bruce McLaren

Bruce McLaren was born in Auckland. He attended Meadowbank Primary School. At the age of nine Bruce unfortunately contracted a disease named ‘perthes disease’. He got this disease in his hip which led to him having his left leg shorter than his right. Bruce's parents owned a petrol station when he was young and he started to develop his passion for cars and motorbikes. When he was awarded his driver's license he would go down in every little bit of his spare time to the car workshop or car club.

Bruce at the age of 14 Bruce claimed an old aging Austin 7 Alster, which he modified and used in his first event which was a hill climb. Two years later, he raced in his first real race which showed he may have a promising career. As the years passed, Bruce got better and better at racing. He improved car racing categories and soon he was into the F2 season. He improved so much that he came runner up in the NZ series.

Bruce soon got his name spread around New Zealand as a upcoming driving legend. He entered into the Grand Prix in 1958. His effort was noticed by Jack Brabham, who later invited Bruce to race for him. People thought he would be the best in the world. He stayed with them for seven years and soon moved on to F1. At the age of 22 he was the youngest Grand Prix winner.

Bruce had soon been one of the best race car driver in the world. He decided to make his own and as most business owners do he named it after his last name. His brand was a big hit he was always trying to make futuristic models. His brand has been a top brand with some very expensive cars. Bruce ended up dying. He died in one of his races. It was a big shock to lots of people but his company kept going and still does making some of the best and coolest cars.

Camp pictures

These are some pictures from camp in term one

Camp Recount Soft Archery

It was time for the best activity  - the activity that thrilled and our second activity was soft archery. The sun was beaming down on my head. We had training before and practice on targets. You could hear the arrows squealing through the air. there were four small stuck on targets and two shots each person it was a lot of fun and we did it twice we had to set into teams of five what was Jess Sarah Gus Lars and me we went in for our game with a great game plan we had dark scary competitive masks. Our first game. I was excited. I heard “Bows up….. arrows up…...andddddd GO". First game the competitiveness came through all ready. Whistling arrows through the air. Boom target one down we were going great in round one. minutes later we were still ahead and we had claimed the win.

After a couple of games/rounds we were in for another game to see who went and faced the parents. we had another outstanding win. Now it was the time to face the parents. Anddddd...... we were off, arrows flying through the air. But not much action at the start until Gus took down a target, then they took down a target. It was one point to each team with three seconds left. I took the final shot and hit one of the adults, just on full time and we were the champions!

Maths Stratergy

In maths we have been learning new strategies in math this is an example of some of the questions and strategies.

Science Activitie On Alan MacDiarmid

Guided Writing

Here is my original piece of writing on the theme of Ducle ET Decorum est. by Wilfred Owen

Memories of war

Me and my fellow comrades can not bear to be here anymore i have been very sick. We all want this to end i can't  get sleep i have been here for many months now i wish this war would end soon.
I am trying to get back from the front line i am hearing noises in my head i need to get some rest and get out of here. I feel sorry for the other soldiers getting shot down as i take the back. I leave all behind.
Everyone has no idea what their doing they are so tired they have put everything behind them they get picked on as i watch all of us walk over sharp objects after losing our gear we need to get back soon and sleep is crucial the are all marching in twirled lines. bullets flying past the men which they don't even notice eyelids half down not knowing what is going on. all these people dont know whats coming next.

as i'm fighting i notice im surrounded. surrounded by gas. I scream to everyone warning “gas, gas, gas”
we all use all of our power to reach for our gas mask and get them on as fast as we can. all the gas steams through the trenches i look round but i can't see. I get on the ground so that i don't get shot .I hear someone screaming out for help with no mask. after the gas clears i see 1 casualtie.
Next comes the greenes it is faint and blinds i see nothing hear nothing he word goes round the back saying the gasses have reached the front line. I scramble around trying to find any other human i can
you see one of my comrades who didnt get his mask on in time he is blinded and begging for help there's no way he will live i am screaming trying to help him he is coughing and dying. i feel so bad as he dies.as he is dieing i see the lungs in side him swelling up and his family waiting at home writing him letters his boddy is crincling. imagine my part having to take this man in the wagon trying to save him i remember him trying to grip on to anything and trying to breath but no he didn't make it. I think of him he was a good man now i remember burying him and flash backing all the moments. I try not to think of bad thing.
Imagine listening while taking him back seeing the blood come up through his mouth and swelling up I  see mucus in his blood his lungs are now in bits i try not to look but i can i'm trying to help him but blood is going everywhere from his body. i hear him moving round in the wagon his eyes go red and his screaming starts dying down. his blood is sizzling and his chest was moving crazily im lucky it's not me.
If you had seen what i had seen you would not sleep and you would have many flash backs it unbearable. War is not a good thing it is not good to die for your country you go through so much pain and you come back a changed person. Thats if you make it back.
Everyone one was scared for life and had different views of war mine was one i never want to go back on.

Stay Where You Are Then Leave Reading Term 1

Well men were first and when the women protested with kate sheppard a lot of people still thought it should only be men. They said  women aren't made for that job so that is why a lot of people would still laugh at her trying to be the prime minister. Men were more respected and do all the muscle work in the old days but things have changed many different people  want the slot of the prime minister.  Back then it was illegal for women to have the job but kalena still believed. She didn't know that she might have the chance in the future after women were allowed to vote and be part of the government. Men still have the biggest part of the government so much more men are doing this job. Everyone thought she was crazy as a kid wanting that but she always ignored them. Maybe it could be because other countries don't want them to have anything to do with the government.

War Without Guns

Room 5 read a story together on the board about a man that is Pakeha giving a man money but needing to pay back the guy who needed to pay back didn't. So he had to get the land taken of him and that's when the war with out weapon started. This was all set in Napier in the 1870s

Looking at Different Points of View

Walt:  Consider different points of view or perspectives to the same events, explaining the differences.

After reading the story, “War Without Guns”’, you are to look at and consider the differences between the two perspectives by thinking about the event that happened and how people reacted and responded to them.

Maori Perspectives
Pakeha Perspectives
Unfair for them
selfish
protective
wanting money
kind to other people
do anything to get it
stay as a team
forcing
Determined to stop the Pakeha
Tricky and faking

Visualisation

In reading we have been working on our comprehension strategies.  Last week we focused on visualisation - they way we can create mental images when we read to deepen our understanding of the text.  We read a short passage that explained how to measure a very tall object without having to climb it and we visualised how we would do this.

Yesterday we went out and put this knowledge into practice. Teva and I went out and measured 3 different objects we had pretty good accuracy getting 2 cm off, 5 cm off and 10 cm off. We had to get a partner. Ask them to stand at the base of an object. Walk back until the pencil is in line with the ground and the bottom of the object then turn you pencil sideways and tell them to go sideways until they reach the end of the pencil tip. After give them a tape measure and ask them to put it at the far end of there foot then measure from there to the object and there is your answer on the tape measure!

Economics

Today in class we learnt about economics being peoples wants and resources. We watched a video about economics and scarcity. Its about how everyone has unlimited wants but there are limited resources. There is limited time so we cant have everything.  We also learnt about scarcity- this is when there is not much of something or it is hard to find. This is the video we got the information from:

'The Giver' - Reflection

What is so jarring about the new list of rules that Jonas relieves after the Ceremony of Twelve? What seems to bother him most about the list?
He could lie. The rules were a whole lot different to his normal rules. The list told him that he can not tell any one about the work he has been doing as the receiver of memory which really annoyed him because he was very eager to tell people. Also he got memory's that where bad . He did not obey the rules and the chief elder wanted him out of his position.

Pressures On The Earth

Room 12B had to blow up a balloon to show how much stress we put on the environment. Miss Kay asked us questions such as:
Do you wrap your lunch in glad wrap?
Do you collect food scraps for the compost or worm farms?
Do you grow vegetables at home?
Do you turn of a light when ever you leave a room?
Do you leave the tap running when you leave the room?
If our answer to the question meant that we were putting more stress on the earth we had to add a puff of air. If we were doing something sustainable we would take a puff of air out. It was a fun subject to try. In the picture below it shows our before and after picture of the 'world' (my balloon!).

Persuasive Writing

Homework is Unnecessary

Yay schools finished...home time to relax. But wait, no not relax time...homework time. Homework is SO boring!

Why do we have to do extra work after school? Isn't that what we go to school for? Work. The teachers are in control of us at the seven hours were at school. When we are at home that's our time not more work time. we might have other things such as music sport or billions of other activities. All it does is waste our wifi which cost money

We get in trouble if we don't do it. And that won't be good for our grades . We will remember stuff instead of extra work we aren't a goldfish with a three second brain span you know when parents say get of your computer and devices and go outside in the sun. We could go outside play with friends help with jobs there are billions of things we could be doing instead of going on our computer  like play  a game go outside play with a friend or have some social time with your family

Considering its normally just learning about someone and what they have done i don't think it is that important. Like with math homework we have a whole 45 minutes to do math then we get home and have to do more. We shouldn't have to do more. We need a break. Its a waste of time.

So this is why I think homework is not necessary for success

Inquiry Homework Reflection

Prostate Cancer
Today my speech is about prostate cancer. Firstly what actually is cancer?  Cancer is a lump or a tumor that grows from normal cells. our body is made up billions of cells and sometimes these grow uncontrollably producing cancer.Cancer is not a single disease with one cause and one type of treatment. There are more than 200 different types of cancer. Each has its own natural course of development and response to treatment

About prostate cancer
This cancer is in the prostate which is a gland below the bladder. prostate cancer is a cancer that can only affect men because women don't have this gland. This is the sixth most common cause of cancer death in men globally and the most common cause of cancer in men in New Zealand.  20 percent of the 3000 men diagnosed in new zealand die each year.  Men who develop prostate cancer are mostly over the age of 65 but can be in their 40’s.

How do you know when you have it?
Men are encouraged to see their doctor and be tested with a blood test from the age of forty. Difficulty going to the toilet to empty your bladder is often an early sign of prostate cancer. If caught early the survival rate is much better.  The risk of getting prostate cancer is higher as you age or if you have a family member who has had prostate cancer.

Can it be treated?
Yes it can be treated but with surgery.  It is best to have it taken out early because it can spread and metastasise to other parts of the body. A  urologist can surgically remove the gland and you can also have chemotherapy , radiotherapy and hormone therapy to help treat it.  You can die from prostate cancer  like other cancers if not treated early enough.  After treatment some men are embarrassed by the side effects of prostate cancer and don't want to talk about things like their bladder leaking.  Some people still don't know what prostate cancer is and how it can affect mens o the prostate cancer foundation runs a fundraising and awareness program through september each year called Blue September.  There is lots of research being done all the time. New research shows that a dog can sniff out prostate cancer with a stunning  98% accuracy this gives us hope for the future.

Ode to my Nose

Oh nose, Oh nose
I go cross-eyed to see you
You sit on the end of my face
Like you’re stuck with glue
Without you I could not smell
Types of foods I could not tell
so i am glad my nose is on my face
not put in a different place

Reading: 'Wonder' Reflection

Book Review
This is my detailed summary of ‘Wonder’ to-date:

Auggie is a not a normal kid he was born with a disease called Treacher Collins syndrome. This means he has a deformed face. he is always being stared at and has his favorite astronaut mask that he wears to hide his face. He has been home schooled for his life, but now he is going to school. At first he doesn't want to, but he is forced by his Mum. Three kids welcome him and give him a tour through the school during the holidays. he had made two friends from that day, but the other one was a bully. His name was Julian. when school was on Jack Will who was one of the boys who welcomed him and was hanging out with him. but when the word got out that Auggie was at the the school something called 'the plague' went round. Read on to find out what that is...

This is what I predict will happen coming up:

the principal will find out that Julian is a bully and he will be the unpopular kid and Auggie will finally be popular.
